Joomla is an SEO unfriendly content management system. As a matter of fact, working with Joomla and having to optimize a site managed with this CMS is one of the worse experiences any SEO can live.
Joomla is simply a nightmare. Its default settings create horrible URLs – both for the search engines and for the users. To overcome the drawback it is good to use a special extension for Joomla called sh404SEF (note that the developers didn’t even bother to give it a better, easier to remember name).
Then you have to address the duplicate content problems. There are ways to do that and the simplest is to disallow the indexing of the duplicate pages in your robots.txt file. Joomla has many advocates and fans – as any other Open Source software, but even these advocates don’t always know how to deal with their favorite product. Joomla sites lose important search engine traffic because of poor SEO. And no matter how skilled an SEO is, there will always be at least one unresolved SEO issue on a Joomla site.
There are a few diy tips on how to fix Joomla SEO issues at YOUmoz, but expert advice in this matter is rather rare. Instead we find more content about the drawbacks of using Joomla and I think you should read them first, before deciding to use this CMS to manage your site. A simple Google search will reveal more horror stories about Joomla than you are prepared to read.
If you choose to ignore the advice and opt for Joomla asa your CMS despite all proofs, you’ll find help on the Joomla community forum and at joomla.org.
