Microsoft and Sitemaps

Since sitemaps.org was released with a big fuss about how all the three search giants Google, Yahoo and MSN are making it easier for the webmasters to get their sites crawled and indexed properly, we’ve had a lot of ups with Google and Yahoo but nothing on the MSN horizon.

There’s already “old news” that MSN will be supporting Sitemaps – we had a thread at Live Search (the official blog of Microsoft Live) sometime in April, but the Search Engine Roundtable analyses this topic now, because recently Microsoft announced that it is going to use “autodiscovery for sitemaps through your robots.txt.”

Submitting a sitemap to MSN was not that difficult in the past. A good robots.txt file was leading the Live bots to the right sitemap URL, but this didn’t necessarily mean that Microsoft was taking into consideration this sitemap.

Sure that was not enough for the webmasters. Besides, SEOs are always hungry for statistics and both Yahoo and Google provide good indexing stats, linkage data and other useful SEO information in the Sitemaps consoles. And you probably didn’t know, but even Ask.com will allow a Sitemap submission. Seeing Live moving into the right direction gives us hope.

With so many SEO trends already happening, it is safe to say that this is the summer of SEO. All you have to do is to enjoy the sun, relax and watch out for new SEO events. SEO has changed a lot in the last 6 months but we haven’t seen the end of it.
