PicLens is a neat new application that transforms your browser into a full 3D display, when you are searching for pictures in Google Image or Yahoo!. This is just one of the web applications/startups that can give you a fair idea about what is achievable in terms of search, indexing, and online technology.
In geeky terminology, PicLens is awesome. The browser add-on lets you preview links and rich media without clicking or leaving the page you are seeing. With a good Internet connection this saves time and provides for a better browsing experience. With technologies like this you can almost forget your “back” browser button.
In terms of SEO this doesn’t mean that much. Text remains text and links will be links. If you link to a site that is not relevant you will have to suffer: the users will see it before leaving your pages, so they will also judge your integrity based on the sites you associate yourself with.
But in terms of accessibility, PicLens shits the paradigm.
Yesterday I spoke about optimizing a website at all levels – particularly emphasizing the importance of “writing scannable.” Today I’d like to remind you that the graphic aspect of your site is equally important: persuade your audience with catchy images and even catchier text content.
PicLens is a startup, but amazingly a very popular tool. It is easy to understand why: PicLens covers a need. The web surfers need fast and easy answers to their questions and this browser add on delivers exactly what the search engine doctor ordered: excellent content in less time, with less effort. Not that’s what I call an innovative product.
